CMA CGM launches new regular service from Hamburg to the eastern Mediterranean
June 5, 2009 - As announced in May, the French shipping company CMA CGM has now launched its new regular weekly service French Europe Med Express (FEMEX) between northern Europe, Greece and Turkey.
With the departure of the AS SCOTIA the CMA CGM shipping company now offers, as from 1 June 2009, a direct link between Hamburg and important seaports of the eastern Mediterranean.
In the course of the 35-day round trip, the service will call at the Greek ports of Piraeus and Thessaloniki as well as Istanbul, Gebze, Gemlik and Izmir in Turkey. By way of the Mediterranean hubs of Marsaxlokk and Tangier CMA CGM also offers transshipment options for goods going to North America, Latin America and West Africa. Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg (CTH) is responsible for the loading and unloading in Hamburg.
In 2008 something like 180,000 containers (TEU) were carried between the Port of Hamburg and the eastern Mediterranean trading area. Built by the Hudong Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai, the ship is 188.50 metres long and 26.50 metres wide. It has a slot capacity of 1,700 TEU as well as 250 connection points for refrigerated containers (reefers). With a load capacity of 25,050 tons, the ship has a maximum draught of 10.50 metres and a service speed of 22 knots. Five ships in all, with a slot capacity averaging 1,700 TEU, are being used for the FEMEX service.
