Wilhelmsen Ships Service South Africa helps Durban street kidsJune 17, 2009 - Wilhelmsen Ships Service South Africa is helping Durban's street kids by supporting I-Care, a South African organisation for social economic development. I-Care operates Hope Centre in Durban, a haven where street kids can begin a process that can lead them back into mainstream society. Outreach teams work in the streets to gain the kids' confidence. When this is established, they are brought to Hope Centre and given meals, clean clothing, a place to have a shower and a potential start on the process of rehabilitation. Ten to twelve boys at a time are chosen to attend the three-month rehabilitation programme, after which an attempt to reunite with the child's family is made. If this is not possible, the kids are taken to live in one of three I-Care family homes and attend a school set up for this purpose. Hope Centre is based at an old village theatre hall that is being modernised for its new purpose. Wilhelmsen Ships Service has helped finance gates, fencing, electrics and air conditioning for the Centre. Representatives from the Wilhelmsen Ships Service Durban office recently visited Hope Centre and were greatly impressed by the work I-Care does to make a positive contribution towards their nation's future.
