 90 Million BHP Achievement of Marine EnginesHyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has achieved an unprecedented aggregate of 90 million bhp (brake horsepower) in 2-stroke engine production.
HHI set the record in just 30 years since the production of its first marine diesel engine. This is much earlier than European and Japanese competitors with 100 years of experience in the field.
HHI reached the production milestone of 90 million bhp in 2-stroke engine with the completion of a 93,360 bhp engine for 8600 TEU containership on September 10.
The 93,360 bhp engine is HHI,s 3020th engine which has the same power as 670 cars. It is 25m long, 15m high, 19m wide and weighs 2100t. The engine also features 12 cylinders, each with a diameter of 98cm.
HHI produced its first marine engine in June 1979. After 13 years, it reached the 10 million bhp mark in 1992. It reached the milestone of 20 million bhp in 1997, 30 million bhp in 2001, 40 million bhp in 2003, and 50 million in 2005. Since 2001, the company had produced 10 million bhp every two years.
HHI has expanded its production capacity to 10 million bhp a year with continuous improvement of technology and facility. The company reached 60 million bhp in 2006, 70 million bhp in 2007, and 80 million bhp in 2008.
The company is expecting that it could record 100 million bhp of 2-stroke engine in the second half of 2010.
Since 1988, HHI has maintained its position of forefront leader in the world,s 2-stroke engine sector. It takes 35% of the global marine engine market.
