Siemens awarded contract for new multiproduct pipeline

Siemens Energy has received an order from Transnet Limited to supply key automation equipment for the new multiproduct pipeline (NMPP) project. The new pipeline with a total length of approximately 700 kilometres will transport petrol, diesel and jet fuel from Durban to Gauteng. The purpose of the NMPP is to meet the growing fuel demand of the region. The total value of the order for Siemens is approximately R495-million.

"Our solution will enable Transnet to reduce its life-cycle costs, provide maximum security for its infrastructure and above all, optimise pipeline operations," said Rainer Ponnighaus, Project Director, Oil & Gas Onshore Solutions, Energy Sector at Siemens Southern Africa. "This will enable us to support the establishment of new infrastructure to meet the growing fuel demand."

The NMPP is expected to become operational in 2010. The Siemens scope of supply includes SCADA, telecoms, automation, a management information system and security systems. The technology Siemens will supply to the NMPP project is based on the company's unique pipeline portfolio which offers a wide range of products for efficient pipeline monitoring and control from a single source. The project encompasses a master control centre with a backup control centre, automation solutions for pumping stations, intake and delivery stations with accumulation tank facilities and block valve stations.
