Wilhelmsen Ships Service provides quick and efficient chemicals changeover to Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.

March 15, 2010 - Wilhelmsen Ships Service has successfully completed a chemicals changeover on the 33 vessel Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCCL) fleet, which includes the Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Azamara brands. The changeover was carried out in accordance with a tight three month schedule, allowing the customer to take advantage of efficiency increases and cost reductions right away. Conversions were done at no additional cost to Wilhelmsen Ships Service's annual fixed fee package for RCCL.

The task was undertaken following the appointment of Wilhelmsen Ships Service by RCCL early in 2009, as its preferred partner to supply technical chemicals, replacing a long-established supplier to its cruise fleet. Wilhelmsen Ships Service faced a tough challenge, that of having to change over the chemicals on the 33 cruise ships sailing from 17 different home ports within a three month window. In fact the switch was completed well ahead of schedule. During this time, 15 different Chemical Service Engineers from Wilhelmsen Ships Service located around the globe provided training from 17 different departure points.

Wilhelmsen Ships Service is very familiar with the RCCL vessels, having supplied them with marine products and technical services for many years. Over the last 25 years the company has steadily increased its market share for technical chemicals to become the clear market leader in the maritime industry. As such, Wilhelmsen Ships Service has gained considerable experience in changing vessels' chemical programmes.

Commenting on the successful changeover, Gerard van Hilten, Chemical Service Engineer with Wilhelmsen Ships Service reflected, "Good communication with the customer's shore and ship based staff was the key to success. We received excellent support from RCCL throughout the process and the relationships we have built with our customer provide a solid foundation for the life of the chemical programme."

When conducting a changeover on a large cruise ship, one of Wilhelmsen Ships Service's chemical service engineers will typically sail with the ship for three days.

Fortunately, cruise ship itineraries are planned well in advance. Once provisional agreement is made with RCCL regarding a conversion schedule, the engineer works with logistics and service colleagues around the world to ensure product and manpower would be available.

Wilhelmsen Ships Service also provides effective training to ships' crew, one of the most important aspects of any technical chemical changeover is to provide effective training. This is particularly important with regard to safety and environmental factors.

Depending on the experience of the crew to be trained, a typical changeover might include such topics as boiler systems, treatment and potential problems, diesel engine cooling and air conditioning system water treatment, sewerage systems and chemical storage and safety.

After the initial conversion, Wilhelmsen Ships Service provides ongoing support to customers. In addition to 24/7 telephone and online support, a Chemical Service Engineer visits each ship on a monthly basis. Quarterly technical reviews are held with shore-based Marine Operations staff to monitor chemical consumption and discuss potential issues with equipment.
