Wilhelmsen Ships Service Brazil handles oversized shipment logistics for Tecnal

Nov. 15, 2010 - The Logistics Brazil Team at Wilhelmsen Ships Service has reported that a Vertical Conditioner, a piece of special equipment to treat seeds in the industrial process to produce vegetable oil (canola) has been shipped from Santos, Brazil to St. Petersburg, Russia.

This out-of-gauge cargo was transported overland in Brazil for 470km arriving at Santos Port where it was loaded onto a Flat Rack Container, on behalf of Brazilian food industry equipment company Tecnal.

"This has been a significant logistics challenge" commented Alvaro Moraes, General Manager - East Coast South America, Wilhelmsen Ships Service Brazil. "We have moved a huge non-standard piece of equipment across nearly 500 km of inland highways until reaching the loading port. We have then monitored a long sea passage until its final destination at Russia. This task has been conducted by a brand new department of Wilhelmsen Ships Service in Brazil which is gearing up rapidly to increasingly demanding projects."

The Delivery Duty Unpaid project was carefully monitored to avoid problems and for this specific shipment our partners CMA CGM were appointed as the shippers. Before starting the process, Wilhelmsen Ships Service's Brazil team analyzed the cargo to check its dimensions and available lift points in the cargo´s body for safe and smooth loading and discharging operations. The consignment weighed 30 tonnes. Due to the size of the equipment the team had also to check the height of all bridges over the roads the cargo must pass through, and cable power lines that could block the way on the journey to Santos. The road trip to Santos was anticipated to take 72 hours and the cargo was escorted by two service cars and monitored by Federal Highways Police. In addition it had to be moved during working hours dictated by the authorities so the time of arrival was critical. This was achieved due to careful planning by the team.

Upon arrival in the warehouse at Santos the equipment was put on a 40 foot Flat Rack container before Wilhelmsen Ships Service arranged it to be transported alongside the ship to be loaded on board. The sea trip was expected to take 15 days, after which Wilhelmsen Ships Service also handled the arrangements for delivery to the final destination.
