Wilhelmsen Ships Service specialist equipment training courses ensure best customer service

Wilhelmsen Ships Service has just completed a wide-reaching training course to instruct its personnel on the service and maintenance of Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), which the company offers as part of its Unitor range of safety equipment. The SCBA products are manufacturered by MSA, with training undertaken by its own qualified instructors. The MSA SCBA course was held in Houston from 21st - 30th October and attended by Wilhelmsen Ships Service technicians at all levels from Central and North America.

Courses of this type are periodically arranged by Wilhelmsen Ships Service for its personnel and subcontractors, to train new candidates and apprentices and to renew expiring certificates of experienced SCBA handlers. Candidates are picked by their Service Managers.

Technicians who take the course and pass the examination are then approved by the manufacturer to service and repair the Unitor/MSA branded SCBA sets. Certificates are awarded and successful completion is recorded in candidates' training log books.

Dave Finlay, Regional HSSE Manager - Americas, Wilhelmsen Ships Service explains "Ensuring that our technicians are highly trained and are constantly updating their qualifications means we can provide a very high standard of customer service. It also ensures that quality and a comprehensive understanding of safety procedures are delivered."

Andrew Sheriff, Business Stream Director Safety and Environment, stressed the importance of this training. "We have achieved a reputation with our customers for quality safety servicing globally and attention to detail in all the areas where we operate," said Andrew. "It is important that we maintain this reputation by making sure all of our technicians are familiar with the latest equipment and regulations."

Finlay further explained what goes into these courses, "We invited personnel from the whole of North America, reaching as far as Panama in Central America. We put on three separate training courses to accommodate the large number of candidates who required this training. We brought instructors from Europe and shipped equipment from various parts of the world including Singapore. So a lot of work goes into the preparation of a course of this type."
