"Economy moving steadily forward" comments Dutch Wilhelmsen Ships Service Manager

March 22, 2011 - "We are seeing a positive trend in the shipping industry with volumes at Rotterdam port touching those of 2008, a record year for the port," comments Hans Mout, General Manager for Wilhelmsen Ships Service in The Netherlands.

He explains "The Netherlands has had a stable year where we grew on all the business streams that we fulfil here at Wilhelmsen Ships Service. 2010 offered a lot of opportunities and it was good to see that the economy is recovering. It is moving slowly, but forward." He adds, "As Rotterdam is our main delivery port in The Netherlands we are in a good position and ready to service our customers on all their needs, not just here but also at the other ports in the Netherlands which can count on our service and support 24/7."

Wilhelmsen Ships Service's Rotterdam office, with its 10,000 sq m of warehouse and workshop space is situated in the heart of the port with a supporting office in Terneuzen which offers agency services. The Rotterdam base supports 26 service ports across The Netherlands and employs 200 people.

Two separate activities take place at the Rotterdam office. The first is the provision of ships agency for vessels calling into the port, including Loose Fire Equipment Service, Fixed Fire Suppression system service, Refrigeration, Liferaft service, Immersion suit service, Gas filling, Fire Detection systems service, EEBD/Breathing Apparatus service, BA Compressor service and Gas detection service. The company's Antwerp office handles the overload as a support station if Rotterdam gets exceptionally busy. The Rotterdam office also works with Wilhelmsen Ships Service's international service network, housing the company's International Distribution Centre and Regional HR and IT system support. The office handles logistics as well as Global Rental Product Asset management.

Wilhelmsen Ships Services in Rotterdam was established more than 40 years ago although the international distribution centre, originally based at the Oslo head office, was moved there more recently. Over 200 people now work in the various Rotterdam divisions including three port engineers, three Ships Agents in Amsterdam, four Ships Agents in Terneuzen, five Ships Agents in Rotterdam, 19 Safety service technicians and four Refrigeration technicians. The operation services and packs new over 2000 liferafts per year, and handles more than 5300 port calls at Rotterdam each year, including 2000 for the port engineers, 1500 ships visits for Ships Agency, and 1800 service jobs for Safety and Refrigeration services.

The company's safety service technicians are permitted to perform testing and servicing as per approvals from the relevant manufacturers. Wilhelmsen Ships Service also holds class approvals from ABS, DNV, Lloyds Register of Shipping, Germanischer Lloyds, RMRS, RINA and IVW (Dutch Shipping Inspection). In addition, the company has an IATA license for warehousing and a license for handling, packing and transportation of all types of dangerous goods.
