Becker Marine Systems to Present the 1,000th Becker Mewis DuctЃ at the Nor-Shipping Maritime Trade Fair

Taking place in Oslo from 2nd to 5th June, Nor-Shipping is one of the world’s most important trade fairs for the maritime industry. Becker Marine Systems will be presenting its 1,000th Becker Mewis Duct® in Norway.
The use of all ducts previously delivered has already lowered CO2 emissions by more than 1.4 million tonnes. The Becker Mewis Duct® has not turned out to be a successful product for Becker Marine Systems alone. It is also reinforcing the aim of attaining greater sustainability in the global shipping industry.

The 1,000th Becker Mewis Duct® was not only celebrated at the exhibition booth in the German Pavilion (Hall C, booth number C01-01e). The original milestone duct was also put on display at the entry area to the trade fair – painted green to illustrate the environmental aspect. Following Nor-Shipping, the 1,000th Becker Mewis Duct® will be fitted onto a newbuilding, a 22,000 cubicmetre LPG carrier and can then also help to reduce CO2 emissions on the world’s oceans.

The Becker Twisted Fin® is also being presented at the trade fair. Becker Marine Systems recently received new orders for 20 of these nozzles that are also energy saving devices. The expertise of the global market leader for high-performance rudders with manoeuvring systems is underscored by the current order for the largest flap rudder in the world measuring approx. 80 square metres. It will provide a 19,200 TEU container ship optimal manoeuvring capabilities, even at a length of 400 metres and a width of just under 60 metres.

The Hamburg-based company is presenting the continuous development of its products. For example, completely grease-free rudder operation can now be ensured by means of a heavyduty polymer bearing system, a further step towards improving environmental protection.

The Becker Intelligent Monitoring System (BIMS), for which Becker Marine Systems has already received 50 orders, is also regarded as a useful addition for safe and fuel-saving manoeuvring. In addition to this rudder force measuring system that has been successful on the market, Becker has developed a new system for the electronic monitoring of heat bearing play. The Becker Bearing Monitoring System’s (BBMS) automatic measurement of bearing wear obviates the need for annual dive inspections that were significantly more complicated in both technical and financial terms.

In addition to rudder and energy-saving solutions, Becker Marine Systems’ business areas include the external supply of power (“cold ironing”) based on liquefied natural gas (LNG) to ships lying at port. In May this year, the LNG Hybrid Barge at the Port of Hamburg was able to successfully carry out the first transfer of power to a cruise ship in Europe, providing 7.5 megawatts of low-emission power to the AIDAsol.

At the same time, in Berlin the LNG Hybrid Barge was presented the “GreenTec Award” in the “Travel” category, an honour that is annually conferred for innovative environmental technologies and environmental commitment. In future, Becker Marine Systems would like to offer environmentally-friendly LNG technology not only to cruise ships, but to container ships, bulkers and tankers as well.
